Remember the name Shayla Sanders.
Sanders is a track star at Boyd Anderson in Lauderdale Lakes.
At the Broward County Championships at Dillard high school, Sanders won the 100M (11.57) and 200M (23.69) races and set personal bests in both.
Her coach, Damion Thomas, who has been at Boyd Anderson the last six years, says Sanders is the “fastest runner I have ever had.”
She already owns the school record in both the 100M and 200M, breaking both last year.
Nationally, Sanders has the 3rd fastest time in the 100M in the country for all high school girls.
All this, and Sanders is just a junior. She still has a year left to race before she graduates.
And Sanders is determined to keep working and getting better.
“As I see my times in the 100 and 200 dropping, that inspires me to work harder,” Sanders said.
Her goals are to get her 100M time down to an 11.4 and her 200M time down to a 23.5.
State Finals would be the perfect place to accomplish that.
“I have been working since July, giving it my all. I am working my heart out, and hopefully I can win it all,” said Sanders.
“I am excited. I want to see what I can run (in state’s). From this week on, I am giving it my all, working as hard as I can,” Sanders said.
The race to state’s starts Monday with Districts. All eyes will be on Sanders, watching from behind as she crosses the finish line.
That’s the goal.
