Names to Know from the Nike Football Camp at UM
CORAL GABLES - When any camp or combine rolls into South Florida, you can almost guarantee that there will be large crowds, plenty of talking and bragging about which area of the state is the best.
That was the scene this past Sunday when the Nike Camp headed to the University of Miami.
With athletes lining the Greentree Practice Field, it was the perfect setting for nearly 400 of the best football platers across the state of Florida to show what they can do.
No matter what direction you looked in, there was talent, and not just for the Class of 2012, but 2013 and 2014 as well swarmed with top recruits from around the state - and some from out of state - on Sunday at the Miami Nike Camp.
For five hours, players were put through drills and competition that would produce some top performances that media from across the country had the opportunity to watch.
In addition to so many locals such as Norland UM commitments Duke Johnson and Keith Brown, fans, coaches and athletes were treated to quite a show.
While these events will never tell the true story of how good these athletes can actually be on he football field - with pads on - it was a good way to judge how athletic many are.
Here are a few observations on players who attended the event:
• Miami Monsignor Pace WR/TE Samad Hinds, who is rumored to be headed to Miami Central, was impressive.
• Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast High LB Atrayo Woodside is picking up plenty of attention from schools.
• Miami Carol City RB Ernest Freeman is someone who has been hidden far too long. He is easily one of the top backs in the state.
• Jayron Kearse from Cypress Lake, who is related to former N. Fort Myers standout Javon Kearse, is a versatile athlete with good size who could play wide receiver or defensive back.
• Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast LB Patrick Jean was solid.
• Once again this week, Hialeah standout WR Gheirry van der Kuyp stole the show. Even though he didn't win MVP, he could have easily taken the honor.
• Is Tampa Jefferson DE/OLB Tyriq McCord really in high school? What a a big time prospect.
• 2012 Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer DT Michael Mims reminds many of former UMer Teraz McCray. Low built and very strong.
• 2012 Weston Cypress Bay LB Josh Witt went to Denton Guyer in Texas and really loves TCU. Bring him back home Horned Frogs.
• Miami Central's new LB Brian Nicholson, one of the Herald's top players in the spring, comes over from Miami Coral Park. Big time prospect!
• 2013 Hollywood Hills LB Griffin Goins is an emerging star to keep an eye on.
• 2012 Belen Jesuit S/RB Frankie Hernandez, RB Imani Davis and DE Alfonso Horner are all big time prospects.
• 2012 DB Adrian Burton, Pompano Beach Blanche Ely is the real deal. More schools will start pouring in on him.
• 2012 WR/S Marcus Maye, Melbourne Holy Trinity really impresses me. That kid has so much to learn, but very talented.
• 2012 Hollywood Hills DE Jean Marc Charles looked great. That kid is really flying beneath the radar screen......WAY BENEATH!!!!!
• Didn't know Miami Southridge 2012 DB Ne'Quan Phillips was from Wisconsin. Like that young man. He is a very athletic player, but its Ridge!
• UM commitment Gray Crow was okay. Nothing earth shattering, but did make a few decent throws.
• Miami Coral Reef 2012 DB Vernon Davis continues to turn it up everytime we watch him.....Big time prospect.
• 2014 OL K.C. McDermott is already bigger than his older brothers who are at Colorado State and UM. The kid is huge!
• Miramar OL was out in force at the UM Nike event with four young men who will really open things up for the Patriots in the fall.
• Miami Norland 2012 OL Ereck Flowers (6-6, 295) is going to be special. So is Miami Archbishop Carroll transfer Jordan Hinojosa (Central)• Curtis Csonka, 2012 OL, Jensen Beach, who was at the RDR Combine on Saturday was there Sunday. Larry's nephew is big, physcial kid.
• Citra North Marion 2012 WR Latroy Pittman is a very athletic player. A great compliment to Price.
• What a player Angelo Jean Louis WR, 2012, Palm Beach Central is going to be. Fast and physical. Not afraid to mix it up.
• Cypress Bay 2013 RB Matt Dayes is another player, who along with St. Thomas standout Fred Coppet, will be nationally rated!
• 2012 Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer QB/LB Faton Bauta is a big, physical kid with plenty of athleticism.
• Virginia Tech 2012 DB commit Donaldven Manning is the real deal. Great cover corner who is leaving Florida!
• Way under the radar local player is Miami Braddock 2012 RB, Jarvon Anderson.
• 2013 WR Vince Funderburke Treasure Coast is a prospect who really made some major strides at the Nike UM event.
